Minnesota Duluth suffered its second consecutive 1-0 loss on Friday night, this time on the road and in overtime to Bemidji State at Sanford Center in Bemidji.

Senior defenseman Mak Langei sent the game-winning goal through off the stick of a Bulldog after a BSU faceoff win 2:23 into the 3-on-3 overtime period to give the Beavers just their second win of the season. BSU (2-7-2) will go for the sweep of UMD (5-4) at 4:07 p.m. Saturday in Bemidji.

“We have one goal with a goalie in the net in the last nine periods so that’s certainly an area we need to get better at,” Bulldogs coach Maura Crowell said. “Yes, we’ve played good goalies, but that’s not new. There are good goalies up and up and down the roster in our league, so we have to be more creative. We have to be more patient on the puck when we have time in the O-zone, using that time to get our heads up and make more passing plays versus just rifling pucks at the net and hoping for more good things.

The Bulldogs have now gone 123 minutes, 17 seconds without a goal with their last score being an empty-netter last Friday in the 2-0 win over Ohio State.

UMD outshot the Beavers 46-17 on Friday night. Bemidji State mustered just three shots on goal in the third period, however, the hosts had the advantage on UMD during 3-on-3 by a 6-2 margin. The Beavers also turned the tide in faceoff during overtime on Friday, winning 4-of-5 draws after UMD won 25 of 45 (55.6 percent) during regulation.

BSU senior goaltender Kerigan Dowhy made 46 saves in her first shutout of the season in 10 starts — third shutout in 35 career starts — while her teammates blocked a total of 19 UMD shots.

UMD junior goaltender Emma Soderberg finished with 17 saves Friday in Bemidji after stopping 78 of the 79 shots she saw last week at home against the Buckeyes.

Both of Soderberg’s saves in overtime Friday came on back-to-back Beavers breakaways, before the deflection got by her.

“She’s been great for us. I wish we could give her some run support here because she certainly deserves it,” Crowell said of Soderberg. “And I know, obviously, our players are wanting to do that. It’s not a lack of want, we just have to work a little smarter.”
