WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Beavers get shut out, land 6 seed for WCHA playoffs

The Beavers will face either Ohio State or Wisconsin -- whoever loses that head-to-head series -- in the WCHA Quarterfinals next weekend.

MANKATO -- The Bemidji State women’s hockey team lost its final race in the WCHA standings on Friday, suffering a 2-0 loss to Minnesota State in Mankato and watching the Mavericks lock up the No. 5 seed.

The Beavers will finish the regular season sixth in the league, just below MSU. BSU will face either Ohio State or Wisconsin -- whoever loses that head-to-head series -- in the WCHA Quarterfinals next weekend.

On Friday, Minnesota State (13-17-1, 9-17-1 WCHA) struck first when Brittyn Fleming buried a shot at the 12:53 mark of the first period. Kelsey King added an insurance tally at 15:36 of the second period.

Bemidji State (11-17-3, 8-17-2 WCHA) generated 28 shots, but none found their way past Mavericks goaltender Chantal Burke all game.

Kerigan Dowhy started in net for the Beavers and stopped 27 of 29 shots.

The two teams will run it back for the regular season finale, which starts at 2:01 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in Mankato.
