Drew Schwan recorded a hat trick, Jordan Fields the game-winner and Elijah Blow picked up his team-leading third win in goal as the Detroit Lakes boys hockey team scored the first seven goals in a 7-2 Section 8A victory over Lake of the Woods Friday, Jan. 10 at Kent Freeman Arena.

The Lakers second line of center Fields and wingers Schwan and Alex Bren recorded the first three scores of a five-goal first period with each player finding the back of the twine.

Top line center Hunter Burnside scored the Lakers’ fourth goal and Schwan tallied with two seconds remaining on the first period clock assisted by Bren and Rian Solberg for a commanding lead after the opening 17 minutes of play.

Solberg’s assist was his first career varsity point.

Fourth line center Nicklaus Hess recorded his first career varsity goal to open the second period and Schwan completed the hat trick near the 13-minute mark of the second period to complete the home team scoring.

The Bears (4-10, 3-3) added two goals in the third period.

Detroit Lakes won back-to-back games for the first time since early December to improve to 7-8-2 overall and 3-3 in the section.

Schwan returned after missing a considerable number of games due to injury and picked up the scoring touch to fill in for two key players currently out of the lineup.

Leading scorer Jackson Fields missed the game due to injury and is expected to be out a week, maybe two. Captain Reed Benson was held out for precautionary reasons. His return timetable has not been specified.

The Lakers look for a third straight win and a season sweep of Crookston (1-14, 1-5) on the road Tuesday, Jan. 14.
