Prep Girls Hockey: Willmar ends its skid

Cardinals beat Prairie Centre 10-0 for first win in a month

WILLMAR — With an offensive explosion Monday night, the Willmar girls hockey team got back in the win column for the first time since Dec. 3.

Outshooting Prairie Centre 74-7, the Cardinals stopped their six-game losing streak with a 10-0 victory at the Willmar Civic Center.

Gretchen Volk tallied the first goal for Willmar at 3 minutes, 22 seconds in the first period, with an assist going to Jayda Richter.

Then the Cardinals’ offense kept finding the back of the net with six second-period goals. Lauren Eilers had a pair of scores in the period. Nina Dawson, Samantha Poe, Kessa Mara and Avery Olson also notched goals in the second.

With a pair of unassisted scores in the third, including a short-handed mark, Mara finished the game with a hat trick. Makenna Larson capped off the scoring outburst with an unassisted short-handed goal.


Volk finished the game with a goal and two assists. Sophia Quinn had three assists in the victory.

In net, Willmar’s Brynn Grieger got her first shutout of the season with seven saves. The Blue Devils’ Kennedy Lemke had 64 saves in the loss.

The Cardinals (5-8-0) return to the ice Tuesday against the St. Cloud Icebreakers at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.
