WILLMAR — The Willmar boys hockey team knew Tuesday’s outcome against Breckenridge/Wahpeton was uncertain. It was, after all, the first game of the season.

But the Cardinals had no idea it was going to end in a 13-0 home victory.

Four Willmar players had multi-goal nights. Sophomore Cullen Gregory and senior Carter Schow scored three. And Samuel Beutow, Taton Hansen and Ethan Stark each scored two.

“We didn’t know what to expect,” head coach Jamie Hagen said. “We have an experienced team with a lot of returning players. The guys worked hard and played hard and we were happy with their performance.”

The Cardinals’ reigned heavy fire on Blades’ goalie Andrew Withuski, who faced 65 shots.

Willmar senior goalie Gavin Steinwand got the shutout with eight saves.

“We knew that we had a quicker, bigger and stronger team than we’ve had in the past,” Hagen said. “The goal was to just continue to move the puck, be quick but also patient so we could get good shots on net. That’s what they did.”

The Cardinals have a quick turnaround with a non-conference road game at Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Thursday.
