Willmar Warhawks

MASON CITY, Iowa — In the final game of a home-and-home series, the Mason City Toros snapped the Willmar WarHawks’ eight-game win streak with a 3-1 NA3HL victory Saturday at the Mason City Arena.

Mason City was able to exact revenge after taking a 4-0 loss on Friday in Willmar.

The Toros tallied the first two goals of the game. At 11 minutes, 37 seconds in the first period, Mason City’s Matt Kochonowski tallied his first goal of the season. Then at 2:27 in the second, Colin Hedland made it a two-goal game with his fifth of the season.

Nearing the end of the game, Willmar’s Patrick Wyers cut the deficit to one with his 13th score of the season. Wyers, a forward from Minnetonka, got assists from Collin Kerchoff and Michael Sweetland.

That momentum swing didn’t last long as the Toros’ Sota Isogai scored a power-play goal, his 20th score of the season, with 3:25 left to play.

The WarHawks took the loss despite having a 30-22 edge in shots. Will Pinney finished with 19 saves for Willmar. Erik Chaffe stopped 29 of 30 shots for the Toros.

The Toros sit in second in the NA3HL West Division with a 23-9-1 record. The WarHawks are third at 18-11-1.

Willmar has three games this weekend. The WarHawks go to Breezy Point for a game with the Minnesota Loons on Friday. The two teams meet up again Saturday in Willmar. Then on Sunday, Willmar plays host to the Granite City Lumberjacks.
