Jonathan Toews and Mike Commodore now have company.
Former UND defensemen Troy Stecher and Jacob Bernard-Docker won gold medals with Canada at the Men's World Championship on Sunday afternoon as the Canadians defeated Finland 3-2 in overtime in Riga, Latvia.
Stecher and Bernard-Docker joined Toews and Commodore as UND's only gold medalists in the event. Toews and Commodore were teammates on the 2007 Canadian team.
Bernard-Docker also joined Toews as the only UND players to win golds in both the World Junior Championship and the Men's World Championship. Bernard-Docker was on Canada's under-20 team last season.
Former UND defenseman Christian Wolanin joined Stecher and Bernard-Docker on the medal stand, too. Wolanin won a bronze medal with Team USA on Sunday morning, defeating Germany 6-1.
Stecher played a key role for Canada.
The Detroit Red Wings defenseman from Richmond, B.C., played 221 minutes, 37 seconds during the World Championship, more than any other player in the tournament. He registered one goal, two points and a plus-5 rating, which topped all Canadian defensemen.
This was Stecher's second World Championship medal. He won silver with Canada in 2019, too.
Bernard-Docker, who played this season for UND before joining the NHL's Ottawa Senators, was a late addition for Team Canada. He played 85:57 in the tournament for the Canadians, who lost their first three games before making a run.
Canada beat Russia 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals, topped the United States 4-2 in the semifinals and beat Finland on a Nick Paul overtime goal.
Wolanin also had an excellent tournament, becoming the seventh UND player to win a medal for USA at the Men's World Championship.
The previous American medalists were Brock Nelson (2015), T.J. Oshie (2013), Danny Kristo (2013), Ken Johansson (1962), Milton Johnson (1949, 1950) and Russell Johnson (1949, 1950).
Wolanin, who was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Los Angeles Kings this season, had a goal, five points and a plus-6 rating in the last three games alone. He scored on a breakaway in the bronze-medal game against Germany.
Wolanin finished the tournament with a plus-8 rating, which was third among all players.
