GRAND FORKS — UND junior forward Carson Albrecht tallied his first collegiate point last weekend against St. Cloud State, assisting on a Griffin Ness goal. Albrecht spoke to the Herald this week about his time at the Fighting Hawks.
Q. What did you take away from your first two seasons here and what area did you need to improve the most?
A. Obviously, the first two years were not how I wanted, for sure. With a lot of people leaving this year, I knew there would be opportunities. Things to get better at. . . definitely consistency. Even coach told me consistency is a big thing, especially in practices. When you only play two times a week, they take a lot out of practices. The big thing is to be consistent everywhere in your game.
Q. Do you feel you’ve raised that consistency level?
A. Absolutely. And it’s in little things – catching passes, making passes, shooting, stickhandling.

Q. Why is your line with Griffin Ness and Nick Portz having success right now?
A. We kind of just build energy. We go, we grind. I think that’s our biggest factor, for sure. Dumbing it down to that is leading to chances as you saw in the last weekend, which is awesome. We’re building a lot of chemistry with the three of us, so that’s nice to see.
Q. You were a top scorer in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Now, you’re on the fourth line here. Has that been a hard transition or was it easy?
A. I think it was an easy transition. My first year, and a bit of my second year, in the SJ, I was definitely on the fourth line. Then, I went to the third line and second line. It’s not something that I’m not used to. I’ve definitely been here before.
Q. How did it feel to get on the scoresheet last weekend?
A. Two-and-a-half years for my first point. It took a lot longer than I wanted it to. It is what it is. I’m glad to be able to contribute to our team there.
Q. During your recruitment, were you considering any other schools?
A. Not really. I was talking to Duluth, but there wasn’t really a whole lot. UND was definitely at the top of my list, but they were kind of the only school, too.

Q. What are your thoughts on the city of Grand Forks?
A. It’s definitely a college town. I think it’s so cool to be a part of it. In the summer, it’s almost like a ghost town. As soon as the students get back, it’s definitely cool to be a part of.
Q. Last weekend was the first time since Thanksgiving that the students were back for a home game. Could you tell a difference?
A. Oh yeah. We were talking about that. It’s actually amazing. The Thanksgiving games were full, but with the students there, the atmosphere goes to another level. The excitement and energy is so much easier to play with. It’s awesome.
Q. What’s your favorite type of food?
A. I’ll say a pulled pork sandwich.
Q. What’s your favorite restaurant in Grand Forks?
A. Charras.
