MANKATO — Social media was set aflame when Minnesota State appeared to win the CCHA Mason Cup Championship over the Bemidji State men's hockey team, only to have the controversial overtime game-winner called back after a delayed and lengthy review.
At the 3:02 mark of overtime, MSU's Josh Groll snuck a puck past BSU netminder Mattias Sholl for the 2-1 championship win. The Mavericks celebrated their championship, but video review showed that the puck slid under the side of the net after Sholl's skate hit the pipe and kicked it up.
After a delay of 1 hour and 14 minutes, the teams finally returned to the ice. And after 2:09 of clock time, Minnesota State won the game for a second time with Jack McNeely's snipe at the 5:11 mark of overtime.
Here are some of the tweets that fans and reporters fired out into the Twittersphere leading up to and during the mayhem in Mankato.

He goes coast to coast, beats the D and tucks in the game winner in under Sholl's right pad at 3:02. Mavericks win 2-1

I *cannot* believe this didn’t even get a review. A championship-winning goal to decide a tourney berth. Man. https://t.co/syLcNj2uCK

Not official yet but it's sounding like they are probably going to disallow the goal, which would mean we'd resume play.

The @MinnStMHockey goal to win in overtime is officially under video review. #MasonCup

26 minutes after the "goal" was scored. https://t.co/MLkpjQwjnT

If the box score isn’t signed off on by the refs, yes you can call it back. That being said, you absolutely cannot allow a team to celebrate for 20 minutes and then tell them they haven’t won.

They're fixing the ice just in case. The building has mostly emptied out. BSU players are still in uniform in the tunnel pic.twitter.com/b5i555MtyJ

POSTGAME: Officials are (have been) reviewing Josh Groll's overtime goal. Expecting an announcement from the CCHA soon.

Here are the frames I have of the @CCHAHockey potential game-winner. Notice the post going up on the right. It’s looking like it snuck under a lifted net. 😳 pic.twitter.com/mebB6sjuSW

They are going to do a 20-minute countdown clock, 5-minute warmup, and then they will resume with the time left on the clock.

One hour after Minnesota State won the conference title on a goal that shouldn't have counted... they've brought everyone back. The goal is disallowed. The Beavers play on. Wild! https://t.co/4L4paUG2V9

No matter how mad you have been at referees today, be glad that you did not have referees take 40 minutes to realize that a conference title-winning goal went under the side of the goal instead of through the front, during which time a trophy was given out & everybody went home https://t.co/c4eFDgfzHO

Refs get a LOOOOOOUUUD booing. Now the teams are warming up. An hour later.
— Shane Frederick (@puckato) March 20, 2022
1) goal scored
— Nordic Nacho (@NordicNacho) March 20, 2022
2) trophy ceremony
3) players leave ice
4) fans leave
5) referees(!) leave the arena
6) goal reviewed because new angle shows puck going *under* side of net
7) game delayed because referees(!) left arena
8) goal overturned
9) chaos

Goal Minnesota State -- Jack McNeely at 5:11. I think this one will count. MSU wins the Mason Cup 2-1 (again)
— Christian Babcock (@CB_Journalist) March 20, 2022
That one should count…

Mavericks end up winning in OT anyways 2-1 pic.twitter.com/Z3v14wQ5fB
It took them an hour and 19 minutes to play another 2:09 of hockey... just for the same result. https://t.co/ZJi1aUv2ri
