REDWOOD FALLS — The Willmar boys hockey team beat Redwood Valley for the second time this season, scoring a 3-2 overtime victory Saturday.

Willmar beat Redwood Valley 7-2 Jan. 14 in Willmar.

Willmar won on Jason Malmgren’s short-handed goal 55 seconds into the extra period. Malgren was assisted by Adam DeJong.

Willmar had taken a 2-0 lead midway through the second period on goals by Aidan Donelan and Ethan Stark. But, Redwood Valley got a pair of goals from Mason Clark to tie it up. Clark’s first goal came at 15:57 of the second period. His second was at 7:14 of the third.

Willmar out-shot Redwood Valley 46-37.

Alec Hovland made 35 of 37 saves in net to get the win.

Willmar closes the regular season with a pair of home games. First, it plays Prairie Centre at 7 p.m. Monday at the Willmar Civic Center. Then, Worthington comes to town at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The Willmar WarHawks completed an important weekend with its third victory in three days Sunday, beating Breezy Point at the Willmar Civic Center.

Mason Wiebusch proved to be a difference-maker. The defenseman from Sauk Rapids scored his third and fourth goals of the season, including the game-winner at 15:10 of the third period, to lift the WarHawks.

Brandon Holt, Robin Praetz and Jake Santarelli also scored for Willmar (16-19-2-1), which out-shot Breezy Point 67-21.

Willmar now tied for fourth place in the NA3HL’s West Division. Both the WarHawks (16-19-2-1) and the Alexandria Blizzard (16-17-2-1) have 35 points. The top-four teams in the West advance to the playoffs.

The Granite City Lumberjacks (32-8-0-0, 64 points), North Iowa Bulls (30-7-2-0, 62) and New Ulm Steel (26-11-2-1, 55) have all clinched playoff berths.

Willmar has six regular-season games left. The WarHawks are host to Breezy Point at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center.

Willmar then plays Feb. 21 at New Ulm against the Steal before playing Feb. 22-23 at Peoria against the Mustangs. Willmar then closes the regular-season at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 against North Iowa in Willmar.
