Junior Hockey: Willmar Warhawks prevail in overtime, 2-1

Junior hockey report from west central Minnesota for Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022. WarHawks salvage a split in their weekend series at Wausau, Wisconsin.

WAUSAU, Wis. — The Willmar WarHawks salvaged the second game of their two-game series with Wausau by beating the Cyclones 2-1 in overtime Saturday night.

Max Cohen scored the game-winner at 2:46 of the extra period to help Willmar improve to 20-13-1 in the NA3HL. It was Cohen’s fifth goal of the season. He’s a forward from Commerce, Michigan. Tate Hammitt and Michael Sweetland were credited with the assists.

The Warhawks opened the scoring with Will Anderson’s goal at 2:31 of the first period. Cooper Olson earned the assist.

Olson is Willmar’s goalkeeper. The 20-year-old from Maple Grove stopped 30 of 31 shots for the victory before 146 fans at Marathon Park.

Wausau beat Willmar 4-2 on Friday night.

The WarHawks are host to the West Division-leading Granite City Lumberjacks at 7:10 p.m. Friday at the Willmar Civic Center. Willmar then plays the Minnesota Loons at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at Willmar before hitting the road at 7:30 p.m. Monday against the Loons at the Breezy Point Hockey Center.
