GRAND FORKS — South-Shanley breezed by Grafton-Park River 3-0 on Saturday for a berth in the North Dakota boys state hockey tournament.
It took only 16 seconds for Tanner Kirkeby to score and give the Bruins a 1-0 advantage in the first period, assisted by Jake Skarperud. Colten Nestler tallied a shorthanded goal at 2:56 of the second period from Carson Dean to make it 2-0 South-Shanley. John Lang capped South-Shanley’s scoring at 6:45 of the second on assists from Sam Ovsak and Kirkeby.
Bruins goalie Zach Sandy tallied 13 saves for the shutout.
South-Shanley (13-7) will be the East No. 3 seed in the state tournament, and is scheduled to play West No. 2 Minot in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Minot.
