The Fargo Davies boys hockey team entered Friday night on a nine-game winning streak.
But as the case has been all season, the Eagles couldn't solve Fargo South/Shanley.
Davies suffered its fifth loss of the season and third to the Bruins in South/Shanley's 3-1 victory in the East Region semifinals at Purpur Arena.
Bruins brothers Zach and Drew Sandy did the most damage. Zach stopped 29 shots in net, while Drew scored the game-winning goal.
"Our goalie made some big saves," South/Shanley coach Dean French said. "He's a talented goalie, and he's confident. He wanted the puck tonight. He was moving and challenging every shot. He did a great job smothering pucks. When plays were in tight and the puck could be bouncing out, he controlled it."
Davies (18-5-0) plays West Fargo in a state-qualifying game at approximately 3:30 p.m. South/Shanley (18-4-1) plays Grand Forks Red River in the region championship at approximately 6 p.m.
South/Shanley's Grant Gores started the scoring at 7:04 of the second period with his eighth goal of the year.
Davies tied the game 1-1 with a rebound, power-play goal by Gavin Balvitsch at 4:25 of the third period.
The Bruins took the lead for good less than two minutes later. Drew Sandy scored a power-play goal 22 seconds into a five-minute major for a 2-1 lead.
South/Shanley, which was outshot by Davies 30-20, tacked on an insurance goal at 13 minutes of the third period.
"I thought we had our moments, just got sloppy and irresponsible," Davies coach Nate Metcalf said. "It can be a simple game, but we make it hard. We stress all year long, keep it simple -- gain zones, get pucks to the net. We have to play a complete game."
