ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The line to get into Cathedral High School's North Gymnasium to attend the celebration of the life of Mack Motzko was long on Monday, Aug. 2. The people in line were nearly all wearing something red. In his obituary, service attendees were requested to wear red because of Motzko's love of golf and Tigers Woods typically wears a red shirt on Sundays when he is leading in a golf tournament.

As people entered the gym, there were programs for the service and stickers available. The stickers read "2001-2021. IN LOVING MEMORY OF MACK. SON BROTHER FRIEND TEAMMATE." There was also a gold #18 (Mack's hockey number) and a Cathedral hockey logo on the stickers.

The Rev. Scott Pogatchnik officiated the event and the speakers during the service also included Drake Lundeen, Brian Schoenborn, Noah Amundson and Ella Motzko. Ella, whose boyfriend, Sam Schuneman, 24, also died in the accident, was supported on the stage by her brother, Beau Motzko.

Motzko's father is Bob Motzko, the University of Minnesota men's hockey coach and former St. Cloud State head hockey coach. A small sample of the hockey people seen in attendance included former Michigan coach Red Berenson, Wisconsin head coach Tony Granato, Minnesota Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin, Minnesota State University-Mankato head coach Mike Hastings, Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore, St. Cloud State head coach Brett Larson, Seattle Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol, former Denver head coach George Gwozdecky, St. Thomas head coach Enrico Blasi, former Northern Michigan head coach Walt Kyle, Northern Michigan head coach Grant Potulny, Minnesota State University-Mankato women's head coach John Harrington, St. Cloud State women's head coach Steve Macdonald, NCHC commissioner Josh Fenton, former Minnesota North Stars player/coach/general manager Lou Nanne, many former St. Cloud State players and former teammates of Mack's from throughout the state.

After the service, there was a meal and reception at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
