The 63rd meeting on ice between Rochester Mayo and Rochester Century was as hotly contested as many that have preceded it.
But for a second time this season, a young, upstart Mayo team turned the tables on Century and pulled out a one-goal victory.
Ryan Dripps’ goal 1:17 into the third period held up as the game winner as Mayo beat Century 4-3 at Graham Arena to sweep the season series against the Panthers. Century had swept Mayo the past four years and had won eight in a row against the Spartans prior to this year.
But for a second time in just more than a month, Mayo pulled out a one-goal win. The Spartans also beat the Panthers 2-1 on Jan. 23.
Thursday, goalie Payton Mancuso methodically backstopped the Spartans to their ninth win in 12 games, making 23 saves along the way.
“Payton was calm, cool and right on his marks,” Mayo coach Matt Notermann said. “He made four or five great saves. It was his best game of the year.”
Mayo (9-3-0) never trailed in the game, but Century (5-6-0) never let it feel comfortable.
Ethan Dennis’ goal at the 11:34 mark of the first put Mayo up 1-0 after one.
Century’s Jonah Ottman struck 1:49 into the second to tie it, but Jacob Brown and Sam Jacobson scored 53 seconds apart for Mayo to give it a 3-1 lead.
Owen Merges answered on a power play for Century midway through the second, and the Panthers’ deficit was just one, 3-2, after two.
Dripps’ goal early in the third held up as the game winner, though Century made a strong push throughout the final period. Aiden Emerich pulled the Panthers back within one, 4-3, at the 4:37 mark of the third, but Century couldn’t solve Mancuso again.
“Ethan Norman was a steadying, calming influence for us,” Notermann said. “Jacob Brown and Ryan Dripps had great games, great puck possession, and buried chances.”
Conor Cozik helped Century stay in the game, too, making 31 stops.
Mayo plays at Northfield on Saturday, while Century plays at Owatonna on Saturday.
