Hockey roundup: Alexandria boys pick up big win at Duluth Denfeld, Blizzard fall 7-1 to Granite City

With a hat trick by Brycen Berg, the Alexandria Boys Hockey team defeated Duluth Denfeld, while the Alexandria Blizzard fell to Granite City 7-1.

The Alexandria boys hockey team earned a big win Saturday by knocking off the Duluth Denfeld Hunters, who ranked fifth in the Class A QRF on MinnesotaScores.net. The Hunters are also ranked No. 10 in the Let’s Play Hockey Class A poll.

With three goals Saturday, senior forward Brycen Berg has now earned hat tricks in back-to-back games.

Two of his goals helped the Cardinals lead 5-1 heading into the final frame. The Hunters did score three goals in the final frame but Berg’s goal six minutes into the frame gave the Cardinals the cushion it needed to win 6-4.

Junior forwards Mason Stennes and Joe Lamski, as well as senior forward Josiah Gronholz each scored one goal.

Senior defenseman Peter Mulder led the Cardinals with two assists. Gronholz, sophomore defenseman Gage Castle and junior forward Tyler Kludt had one assist.

The Cardinals finished with 38-31 shots on goal advantage.

Senior Teagan Pfeffer earned the win in net for the Cardinals with 27 saves.

The Cardinals are on a four-game winning streak and are 12-6-1 on the season. The Cardinals have won five road games in a row.

The Cardinals return home for a game against the St. Cloud Crush on Tuesday. The Alexandria Cardinals hockey program is hosting a doubleheader Tuesday, with the girls playing against Bemidji at 5:30 and boys playing at 7:15 as a part of the Jack Albert Fundraiser. Albert is a 10-year-old squirt in the Alexandria Youth Hockey Association.

Jack is currently receiving inpatient care at the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

All proceeds from the night will be donated to the Albert Family and Jack's fight against Stage IV Burkitt’s Lymphoma.

There will be a $1 chuck-a-puck, and $10 raffle tickets on sale.

Raffle drawings after the girls game include prize packages of a “pamper your hockey mom” and “I love Alexandria” baskets. Drawings before the third period of the boys game will include “Yeti Tailgate” and Milwaukee Tailgate” baskets, along with a dinner for four prize at Pike and Pint restaurant in Alexandria.

Blizzard fall at Granite City 7-1

The Alexandria Blizzard fell on the road, 7-1 to the NA3HL’S top team, the Granite City Lumberjacks. Granite City also beat Alexandria 6-0 earlier in the week on Wednesday.

Coby Weber had a hat trick in the win for Granite City.

The Blizzard’s lone goal of the night came on a powerplay in the first period. Forward Cole Klingbeil scored, while forward Alex Heidenrich and defenseman Wyatt Johnson had the assist.

Granite City finished with a 43-23 shots on goal advantage.

The Blizzard fall to 19-17-1, while the Lumberjacks improve to 38-1 on the season.

The Blizzard return to the ice this coming Wednesday for a home game against the New Ulm Steel (10-27). Puck drop is at 7:10 p.m. The Blizzard just beat the Steel 6-2 on Friday.
