ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Because of the brutal cold earlier in the week, the outdoor practice that the St. Cloud State men's hockey team had scheduled was postponed. The Huskies will now practice from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Haws Park.
The Huskies will once again partner with the Boys and Girls Club and the St. Cloud police department for the practice, giving kids the opportunity to see the Huskies live and in person. Like last year, the practice will be open to the public; however, there will be no skating with the Huskies portion due to COVID-19 protocols. Hot chocolate and snacks will be provided.
Last year, the Huskies had an outdoor practice at Lake George.
St. Cloud State will honor its seniors on Saturday when the No. 6/7-ranked Huskies (13-9-0) play Colorado College (4-13-2) at noon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU will honor seniors Seamus Donohue (D, North Oaks, Minn.), Luke Jaycox (D, Warroad, Minn.), Tyler Anderson (D, Winnipeg, Manitoba), Will Hammer (F, St. Cloud, Minn.), Jared Cockrell (F, Kents Hill, Maine), Easton Brodzinski (Blaine, Minn.), Kevin Fitzgerald (F, Hinsdale, Ill.) and Dávid Hrenák (G, Považská Bystrica, Slovakia) on Saturday.
Fitzgerald named a CLASS award nominee
Fitzgerald has been named one of 15 NCAA Division I players up for the 2020-21 Men's Hockey Senior CLASS Award. In order to be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
A former walk-on, Fitzgerald leads the Huskies in game-winning goals (3) and faceoff win percentage (60.8%, 73-47) and has seven goals, 12 points, 16 penalty minutes and is even in plus/minus in 21 games this season. In 116 career games, he has 27 goals, 61 points, 65 penalty minutes and is a plus-16.
An accounting major, Fitzgerald has a 3.42 cumulative grade-point average and is on track to graduate this spring. He is a three-time Academic All-NCHC selection and is currently enrolled in the St. Cloud State honors program. He is a two-time recipient of St. Cloud State's Herberger Business School Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship and earned the Elloyd A. Hauser Scholarship for the Herberger School of Business.
During the summer of 2020, Fitzgerald interned with KPMG, an accounting firm in Minneapolis and accepted a full time position as an Audit Associate beginning in fall 2021. In his spare time, Fitzgerald volunteers with the St. Cloud Frostbite Special Olympics floor hockey program and has participated in several Huskies outreach community programs, including the Polar Plunge, Skate with the Huskies and Huskies Haulers.
The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists, whom will be placed on an official ballot for nationwide voting. The Senior CLASS Award winner will then be announced during the 2021 Frozen Four in April. Ben Hanowski was named to the CLASS All-Senior All-America second team in 2013.
Talking Huskies on the radio
The Rink Live's Mick Hatten appeared on WJON's "Hang Up and Listen" show on Friday. He discussed last weekend's series split at Miami, helped preview Saturday's game against Colorado College, the NCHC race and the NCAA tournament selection process.
Women's series postponed
The St. Cloud State women's hockey team was scheduled to play Feb. 19-20 at Ohio State. St. Cloud State paused all team activities for seven days due to COVID-19 protocols, which will prevent the series from being played this weekend.
The Huskies (4-12-1) are scheduled to play Bemidji State (2-12-2) at 3:07 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Sanford Center in Bemidji. The two teams are scheduled to play Game 2 of that series at 1:07 p.m. Feb. 27. It is the last scheduled series of the regular season for St. Cloud State.
The Huskies and Beavers are the bottom two teams in the WCHA and will not participate in the conference's tournament this season. The WCHA announced that only the top four teams at the end of the regular season will compete in the conference tournament in 2021.
