Dave Shyiak is set to make a trip across the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
The Western Michigan associate coach has accepted a job as St. Cloud State's new assistant coach, according to multiple sources. That move is in the process of being finalized on St. Cloud State's end right now.
Shyiak, who has worked with Western Michigan's defensemen, will likely assume the same role at St. Cloud State. That position opened when longtime assistant Mike Gibbons retired earlier this offseason.
The lateral move may seem odd at first glance, but it will bring Shyiak closer to his hometown of Brandon, Man. Shyiak, who has previously served as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan and a head coach at Alaska Anchorage, has ties to the area.
Shyiak's hire will round out St. Cloud State's coaching staff, which already features head coach Brett Larson and assistant coach Nick Oliver.
That opens up an assistant coaching position at Western Michigan.
But a source says the Broncos already know how they're going to fill it.
Western Michigan will hire former Broncos forward J.J. Crew, who played under Jim Culhane, Jeff Blashill and current head coach Andy Murray in Kalamazoo. Crew was on Western Michigan's 2011 and 2012 NCAA tournament teams and played a key role in leading the Broncos to the 2012 CCHA playoff championship.
Crew has served as Western Michigan's director of player development for the past three seasons.
Although Western Michigan's associate head coach, Pat Ferschweiler, coached the forwards last season, he has experience coaching defensemen. That was his role during his first stint with Western Michigan before he left to join the Detroit Red Wings coaching staff.
Ferschweiler was working with the defensemen in 2012, when the Broncos had four future NHL blue liners on the same defensive core -- Danny DeKeyser, Jordan Oesterle, Luke Witkowski and Matt Tennyson. Considering that, it seems likely that Ferschweiler will be asked to take over the defensemen from Shyiak.
Western Michigan's defense figures to be a work in progress next season after losing three seniors -- Cam Lee, Kale Bennett and Luke Bafia -- as well as Mattias Samuelsson, who signed with the Buffalo Sabres.
Similar coaching staff setups
Crew's hire will continue what has become a bit of a pattern in the NCHC: two assistant coaches being split between a veteran coach and a younger coach.
UND had that setup last season with veteran Dane Jackson and Karl Goehring, who was in his first year as a full-time college assistant.
St. Cloud State has that setup with Shyiak, a veteran, and Oliver, who recently turned 29 years old. The Huskies also had that setup with Gibbons and Oliver.
Minnesota Duluth had that setup with Jason Herter, a veteran, and Adam Krause, who is 28. Herter left Minnesota Duluth earlier this month. The Bulldogs are currently looking to fill that spot.
Now, Western Michigan will have that setup with Ferschweiler, a veteran, and Crew, who is 31.
