MINNEAPOLIS — Bryce Brodzinski scored two goals in the third period to help lead the fourth-ranked University of Minnesota men's hockey team to a 5-3 nonconference win over Mercyhurst on Saturday at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The Gophers (2-0) trailed 3-2 going into the third period. Carson Briere scored at 4:46 of the second period to take a 3-2 lead.

But Brodzinski, a junior forward from Blaine, Minn., scored a power-play goal at 3:50 of the third period to tie the game at 3-3.

Ben Meyers scored 1:14 after Brodzinski to give the Gophers a 4-3 lead. Then Brodzinski, a former Mr. Hockey winner, scored at 14:13 of the third period to give the Gophers a 5-3 lead.

Jonathan Bendorf and Austin Heidemann had the other goals for Mercyhurst (0-2). Kyle McLellan stopped 37 of the 42 shots he faced for the Lakers.

Jack LaFontaine stopped 16 of 19 shots for the Gophers to pick up his second win.

The Gophers have a home-and-home series against St. Cloud State next weekend. The teams play at 7 p.m. Friday at 3M Arena at Mariucci and at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
