ST. PAUL — Ever since the Eveleth Golden Bears took the ice at the St. Paul Auditorium in 1945, high school players have dreamed of playing in the Minnesota State High School League boys’ state hockey tournament.

With a 16-0 win over Granite Falls in the quarterfinals, Eveleth established the tournament record for the largest margin of victory — a mark that still stands 75 years later.

Two more wins that year — including a come-from-behind victory in the title game — etched their names into the history books as the tournament’s first champion. Three years later, freshman John Mayasich helped the Golden Bears to the first of four consecutive titles. Mayasich and Eveleth still hold records from those four perfect seasons.

Now entering its 75th year, the MSHSL tournament’s history and legendary status continues as teams from across Minnesota have battled to make their way to St. Paul.
