Rochester Grizzlies win 1, lose 1 on the road to open their 2nd NA3HL season

The Rink Live

The Rochester Grizzlies opened their second season in the North American 3 Hockey League over the weekend, splitting a pair of games on the road.

Rochester dropped its season opener 5-3 at Milwaukee on Friday night, but bounced back with a big 5-1 win at Peoria on Saturday.

Rochester never trailed Saturday at Peoria, earning its first victory under new head coach Chris Ratzloff. Bemidji native Zak Justice scored 6:21 into the game — his first goal as a Grizzly — to give Rochester the lead for good. The Grizzlies extended their lead to 3-1 after two periods on goals by Michael Heitkamp and Jesper Hofling.

Heitkamp, a defenseman from Grand Rapids, scored again early in the third period and Anders Bogdanovs added an insurance goal a minute later.

Shane Soderwall got the win in goal, stopping 17 shots. Rochester put 24 shots on goal.

The Grizzlies gave up two goals in the final eight minutes on Friday in the loss at Milwaukee.

John Marshall’s Teejay Torgrimson, Clayton Shultz of Eden Prairie and Lourdes grad Lucas Newman scored for the Grizzlies in the loss. Sean Guerin stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced in the loss.

The Grizzlies are back in action Friday and Saturday when they play their first home games of the season, against the Wausau RiverWolves. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. both nights, at the Rochester Recreation Center.
